New research shows the miraculous effect of lowering blood fat, preventing heart disease, Alzheimer’s… of a plant extremely familiar to Vietnamese people.
Writing in the scientific journal Nutrients, a research team from Foffia University, University of Bari, University of Bari Aldo Moro (Italy), and King Faisal University (Saudi Arabia) have shown that artichokes can be a “miracle drug”. It’s good at lowering blood fat, blood sugar, and blood pressure and preventing a deadly disease.
A suggestion for preparing Mediterranean-style artichokes.
For a long time, in many countries, from the Mediterranean to Asia, artichokes have been considered a healthy food and drink that helps clear heat and is suitable for people with some chronic diseases.
This study aims to demonstrate the rumored effects of artichokes based on specific scientific evidence.
Scientists have identified beneficial bioactive compounds in the parts of the artichoke plant commonly used for tea and cooking.
This plant has a low-fat content, high content of insoluble fiber, vitamin C, minerals (phosphorus, potassium, and sodium), phenolic compounds, and their derivatives – hydroxycinnamic acid group and flavonoids. ..
Among them, a prominent compound is chlorogenic acid, which has a comprehensive health-protecting effect. In contrast, cynarin has a liver-protective effect, while flavonoid derivatives have sound anti-inflammatory and pathogen-inhibiting effects.
Extracts from artichoke stems, leaves, and flowers can fight against common gastrointestinal pathogens, including typhoid bacteria, staphylococcus, and E.coli, as well as against some harmful fungi, inhibiting the replication of some viruses.
With cardiovascular disease, artichoke has the effect of fighting high blood pressure and, most powerfully, the ability to fight dyslipidemia, that is, “fatty blood” or “high blood fat”.
An experiment using artichokes for 8 weeks showed that all volunteers reduced total cholesterol, bad LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides while increasing good HDL cholesterol.
People with mild blood pressure can even get better after 12 weeks of supplementing with concentrated artichoke juice.
In addition, the high anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of this “miracle drug” also help it have a neuroprotective effect, which is very useful in preventing Alzheimer’s and other forms of memory loss and anxiety disorders. And depression.
This also protects the liver against non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
The authors concluded that the above properties suggest that artichokes should be part of a healthy diet, especially for those who need to strengthen immunity, lower blood fat, and protect the nerves.
The good news is that artichokes can be easily accessed in Vietnam through different forms, from artichoke tea to soups and stir-fries… that use this ingredient.
Meanwhile, Mediterranean countries often use artichokes as a vegetable to add flavor to savory dishes.
